A loadful of Lippies in these Sephora Favorites sets

Hiya bellas,

Today I’m going to be sharing with you two lip sets I picked up from Sephora last year. After months of testing, I can give you my opinion on the items because most of them are individually available and Sephora always has different variations of these lip sets on offer if you’re interested in picking one up. Also, I think the new ones for 2018 will be released soon so I can let you know if it’s worth it. Let’s start with the smaller of the two sets.

Sephora Favorites Give Me Some Nude Lip – $28 ($68 value)

The main reason for picking this set was for the full sized Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick (R290) since it hadn’t yet launched in SA. I got the shade Trivial, a matte pink nude which looks more of a baby pink on me. It’s super pigmented and wears for a good 4-5 hours before fading. The packaging is sleek with the long silver top even though it’s prone to fingerprints. The formula is quite drying so I recommend always hydrating your lips first.

The Tarte Lingerie Lippie Matte Tint (R370) in Revealed is the perfect sexy nude for my skin tone. The mauvish brown crayon is hydrating on the lips while giving a slight wash of colour. The only downside is that it’s not long wearing but does leave a slight tint behind.

The NARS Velvet Lip Glide (R650) in Bound is a gorgeous, creamy lip paint with a high opacity. The mini square packaging is a standout on my vanity and I’d love to get my hands on more. It is comfortable on the lips and lasts around 2-3 hours before needing to reapply.

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss (R299) is one of my favourite formulas. The shade in Kristen, a soft dusty-pink, is very pigmented and lasts for hours compared to other glosses. You can read my full review of the others I own here.

Whilst the Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer ($28) looks oh so sophisticated and chic in its packaging, the shade Sugar Sugar is wayyy too light for my skin tone. I initially used it on just the middle of my bottom lip to give some extra highlight, but now it’s found its home just chilling on my vanity.

The Too Faced Lip Injection Glossy (R600) in Spice Girl barely shows up on me but I’m not too fazed by that. The fact that it tingled so bad every time I applied it, I decided to give up and not use it again. I don’t mind the tingle since the NYX Lip Plumpers and Buxom lippies are a staple in my routine, but this just darn outright burns like a …

Thoughts

While this set is great value for money, I find myself barely reaching for most of the lippies. I am happy I purchased it because apart from the Marc Jacobs gloss, the other ones are formulas I was itching to try. This way I didn’t waste my money on full sized products although I must mention, not being able to select shades I like does take the fun out of it.

Sephora Favorites Give Me Some Lip & Liner – $60 ($185 value)

Even though this set was $60, I managed to get it on sale for $30 when my friend ordered it for us. Not bad considering there are 14 products in the box, 4 of which are full-sized.

I’m not really a fan of lip liners but I found a gem in this set. The Laura Mercier Lip Pencil ($25) in Naked is a gorgeous soft nude that would suit an array of skin tones. The formula is soft and creamy and applies like a dream. I’ve worn this many times just on its own and I’m glad that I received a full sized one in this set. Another full sized product is the Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner (R300) in Crimson. It’s perfect for any red lip and lasts for hours without budging.

The Know Cosmetics No Bleeding Lips Secret Lip Liner ($15) is just a gimmick in my opinion. The clear liner (also full size) is supposed to be applied to prevent your lipstick from bleeding or feathering. I tried it with one of the lipsticks that always bleed on me and it didn’t stop it from happening. Then, even though the Tarte Tarteist Lip Crayon (R270) in Mood Ring is a gorgeous shade, the pencil is so dry and chalky that it tugs during application and not much colour is transferred to the lips. I thought it was perhaps a dud but I received another Tarte lip pencil in a different shade and it did the exact same thing.

On to lipsticks. The MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Rouge (R450) in M-401 MAT is a show-stopping red that lasts for hours on the lips while being super comfortable. The Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture ($37) in N° 70 Le Nu is a bit light for me but I love the formula. It’s creamy and feels amazing on the lips. There has been a lot of hype around the NARS Cosmetics Velvet Matte Lip Pencils (R650) but after trying additional shades, as much as I like the comfort and hydration it provides, the short wear time was a letdown. However, the shade Cruella is right up my alley.

I already own (and reviewed) the Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Double the Lip (R295) in Fuchsia Fever so I didn’t even open this one. The last full sized product is the Estée Edit Lip Flip Shade Transformer ($22) in Turn Down. The concept is the same as adding a dark eyeshadow base to amp up the colours packed on top of it. While it does work, I found that it was always patchy and if I tried to wear a liquid lipstick or matte lipstick over top, it changed the texture and wear time. Not something I would recommend picking up although reading this post did give me feels.

The Buxom Full-On Lip Cream ($20) is the most impressive lip plumping formula I have ever tried. Thanks to my bestie, I now own 4 shades. Included in this set is Kir Royale which Buxom describes as a rich wine shade. I usually wear it on top of a matte lipstick so it comes off more cherry. Once it hits the lips it gives a minty, tingling feeling which fades within a few minutes. Colour payoff is decent enough to wear on its own but the most impressive part is the moisture it provides for hours on end. I reach for these at least 4 times a week and I would love to add more shades to my collection. Right now the others I own are Sugar, Berry Blast & Berry Bramble.

The Too Faced Cosmetics Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick (R300) is a formula I’ve been wanting to try forever. After reading so many mixed reviews I always skipped on it. The shade Sell Out is a pinky-brown that translates as being too light and too pink on my skin tone. Pros to the formula are that it is very opaque, dries down quick and long lasting but the cons of being streaky during application and being very drying on the lips, to a point where it got uncomfortable, is just a no for me. It emphasized my dry spots and settled into the cracks making my lips look like raisins.

The Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer ($28) in Pretty Thing is supposed to be a muted rose but applies clear to my lips. I was disappointed it didn’t match the pretty packaging like in the nude set but oh well.

Another formula I am totally obsessed with is the Ciate London Liquid Velvet lipsticks (R250). The shade Voodoo is included in the set but I also managed to pick up a trio on special from Foschini for Beauty for just R290. (It’s still available here if you want to pick it up.) The packaging is super cute, make great travel buddies and the formula is opaque and long-wearing. I did find that Voodoo did apply streaky but a second coat masked all the patchiness.

Lastly, the Stila Cosmetics Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick (R305) in Beso, a true red, is just GORGEOUS. I had the shade Tesoro, which is more orange-red and I must say I prefer Beso over it. As part of my order, I was able to select a deluxe sample and I managed to get the infamous shade in Patina. It’s one of those products that have been hyped for years and after trying it, I’m obsessed. The dusty rose shade is flattering to a number of skin tones with even darker shade beauties being able to pull it off.

Thoughts

To put things in perspective, I practically only paid for the full-size Smashbox liner and Benefit lipstick. Everything else was free. Luckily I wasn’t charged customs and shipping worked out to around R120 per package. In my opinion, these Sephora Favorites sets are insane value for money, great picks to try mid-high end brands and some decent shades to suit a range of skin tones. I’ll be keeping my eye out for different sets and hopefully find ones with brands I have yet to try.
